November 2023 News
This month marks the official beginning of the Art Season with our first Gold Palette event on November 9th.
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Describe your creative process.
I begin with an idea and work up a value sketch. I dig through my bins of lace, remnants, and feathers amongst other things to find interesting textures and place them on paper. I pour watercolor paint over the objects, letting the paint dry and do its thing. Details are added with brushstrokes or watercolor crayons.
How has your art evolved over the years?
In my early years, I was focused on capturing a realistic likeness of what I was painting. After mastering that, I began loosening up with the paint, letting it splash and drip.

What inspires you to create?
I am curious, love to learn, try new things and create. I have both taken and taught art classes in my adult life, which feeds and fuels my joy of learning.
I am hands-on, love to brainstorm creative ideas, I feel and notice the little things, and love to share that with others.
"Weaving imitates life – sometimes bumpy, sometimes smooth, when woven together, you can see and feel the beauty, the growth.”
Describe your creative process.
I was exposed to fibers and introduced to many historic weaving techniques, in graduate school. Instead of weaving tapestries, and traditional baskets, which many were designed for, I would just naturally create and weave organic, sculptural forms.
The coil method (of wrapping and sewing with a needle, and many, many stitches) was the technique that I became captivated with and use to this day.
Creating Fiber Mixed Media, allows me to add in all the other media I love, and have studied and taught, adding variety not only in material but also textures, shapes, and endless possibilities.
How has your art evolved over the years?
I found myself always gravitating back to my fibers and my favorite methods of weaving.
I finally got to the point where I just thought I would stick to and fully immerse myself in what I loved. Even though I was not sure if I could produce enough with my technique taking so long, and it being very different in what I was creating with the technique, I went for it. Do what I love and everything else will follow…
I started weaving and then naturally started mixing in other materials to get the effects I desired, for the overall expression, the difference in textures, look, function, and interest…. In creating, it felt like a win-win, in many ways.
Especially as I got more and more into fibers, my national and international travels became the perfect inspiration and source to seek out my supplies, creating along the way, showcasing the global natural beauty around us… leading to what you now see in my sculptures.
